How can I make the world a little more comfortable.

FREE WATER!

For most of my adult life, I have wanted to plant a garden.  So, at 42 (almost) my wife and I decided to start a small 8′ x 7′ garden.  Just some tomatoes, peppers and marigolds, but a garden nonetheless!  If I remember correctly, about 1/3 the way through stripping the grass, I asked, “Who’s #$*! idea was this?!”  Oh yeah, mine… Well I have a garden started… now if I had a source of FREE WATER… enter God and my roof, plus some recycled plastic.

We get “Free” water much of the time in forms of precipitation (duh…) but we let all of it fall on our roofs, into the gutter, down the downspout and let it go to waste.  I have a link below to get you started, but in the next few weeks I will edit this page and provide some photos of what we (my wife and I) are experimenting with.  If you wish to search the internet, look for “Rain Barrels”.

Rainwater collection from roofs can be calculated using the following formulas:

  • 1 inch of rain on a 1000 square feet roof yields 623 gallons of water; or
  • 1 millimeter of rain on a 1 square meter surface yields 1 litre of water.
